The expansion of the security screening area at Copenhagen Airport in Kastrup, Denmark brings a calmer, more streamlined experience for travelers and staff. The upgraded area introduces advanced screening technology with automated tray return and remote monitoring software, helping travellers move through the process with reduced stress.

Acoustics were placed at the centre of the design strategy, and the new zone integrates Rockfon OneFrame acoustic ceiling islands throughout, allowing the terminal to feel composed and comfortable even during peak hours.

Future-ready acoustics for Denmark’s busiest airport

Holm & Grut Architects approached the redesign with a strong focus on acoustics and indoor climate, and noise control was a priority given the constant movement within the terminal. The practice sought a space that fosters a sense of calm, supporting both travelers' flow and staff's everyday comfort.

Rockfon and main contractor Jakon shaped a layout where performance and a minimalist aesthetic could coexist. This partnership guided decisions around surfaces, access to services, fire safety needs, and the many services present throughout the space.

“We have had close dialogue with both the architects and the contractor to find solutions that provide both calm and functionality,” says Lars Hermansen, Project Sales Consultant at Rockfon.

Airport ceiling design for a busy terminal

Among several supplied products, Rockfon OneFrame suspended acoustic islands were selected to provide strong sound absorption while keeping the visual expression clean and coherent. The system is paired with Rockfon Blanka ceiling tiles, selected for their ultra-white, ultra-matte finish, anti-static coating, and Class A sound absorption, helping to regulate reverberation levels and ease speech clarity thanks to a powerful stone wool core.

Rockfon OneFrame stood out for its adaptability. Its matte aluminium frame creates a strict, refined appearance, while its modular form makes ventilation, lighting, and cooling systems easily accessible. It is compatible with the majority of Rockfon acoustic ceiling tiles, and at Copenhagen Airport, Rockfon Blanka maintains a bright and unified tone throughout the area.

“It was important that the solution would be service-friendly and flexible. Beyond the desired holistic qualities of the interior, it was important for us not to commit to a system that would be cumbersome to maintain in the future. It needed to be a long-term solution,” explains Mikael Funch Hansen, Department Manager at Jakon.

“It has been very interesting to work with Rockfon and their new minimalist profile, Rockfon OneFrame. The Belgian Manager Training and System Support, Tom Raes, even visited to discuss wishes, requirements, and possibilities," says project manager Patrick Ranild Larsen.

An upgraded experience

“The new security area creates a space where thousands of travelers can move through each day in a more calm and pleasant way,” says Lars Hermansen. " An area like this never really experiences silence, and noise levels can quickly become overwhelming. So it has been about creating a good experience for passengers."

As the wider project progresses toward completion in 2026, Copenhagen Airport will introduce twenty new security lanes that continue this integrated design approach. The result is a long-term acoustic and operational strategy that supports smoother travel and better working conditions for staff – making Denmark’s busiest travel hub more pleasant, both for travelers and for those who work there every day.
