The City Center of Marseille is the new convention center of the new generation World Trade Center Marseille Provence. This space of 2,600 m² was opened in October 2018, after four years' work. Its fully redesigned architecture includes new spaces and equipment. Rockfon®, acoustic solutions expert, supplied tailor-made products for this gigantic project: Rockfon Eclipse islands installed in two meeting rooms and in a coworking space, and Rockfon Mono Acoustic used in the lobby.

The City Center has modular and re-sizable rooms for making different event configurations. Its clean modern style suits new, more informal and roaming, working and meeting methods, which encourage exchanges and friendliness.
In restructuring the site, acoustic comfort was essential. The solutions then developed by Rockfon were selected to equip several spaces: Rockfon Mono Acoustic in the lobby and Rockfon Eclipse islands in the coworking space, and in the two large meeting rooms.

The Tangram Architecture team had to follow very precise specs. The floor and the ceiling had to have the same pattern to comply with the City Center's graphic charter. When thinking about the ceiling design, Rockfon was able to adapt its products to the contemporary style of the new convention center and then proposed two different heights of Rockfon Eclipse islands for the ceiling of the two meeting rooms to give a serrated appearance.

In the coworking area, the idea was to have a very open, yet confidential, space. So Rockfon recommended using a ceiling of Rockfon Eclipse islands with a smooth super-white matte finish offering high reflection and optimal light diffusion.

In the lobby, Rockfon Mono Acoustic was chosen for its acoustic properties and elegant finish.

At the opening of the City Center, the guests were looking not at the floor but at the vast ceiling made with Eclipse islands. They were surprised that this type of design could be made for a ceiling. The ceiling, unlike the floor, is often neglected. In interior decoration, the floor is always worked hard because we can put what we want there, but the trend is starting to go in reverse.

Rockfon, always keen to improve user acoustic comfort, gave the Tangram Architecture team free rein to their imaginations to produce a unique ceiling. The ceiling then went from being a hidden element to a visible element.

"We wanted to make the ceiling a separate part of the interior decoration which is seen. We really didn't want to hide it. So we approached the Rockfon team who allowed us freedom with the shape that we wanted to give to our ceiling and to produce this serrated appearance", explains Eléa Paoli, Project Manager with Tangram Architecture.
